ABOUT DAVEY DRILL
“Davey Kent Inc. (a.k.a. Davey Drill) was established in 1981 by J. Thomas Myers II. The company was built on the tradition of the Davey Compressor Co., which was founded by Myers’ grandfather, Paul Davey, in 1929. Davey Compressor was originally known for its innovative air compressor designs and entered the drill rig manufacturing business in the early 1950s after acquiring rights to drill designs developed by ELI (Engineering Laboratories Inc.) of Garland, Texas. In 1970, the Davey Compressor Co. was sold to ALCO Standard—a large conglomerate based in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Five years later, ALCO sold the compressor line and moved the drill rig operations from its native Kent, Ohio, to Chicago, Illinois. Operating under the new name of Davey Rousselle, the company continued to produce mobile drilling equipment until 1980 when a protracted labor strike and downturn in the coal-mining market forced the company to close its doors. Myers started Davey Kent Inc. approximately one year later and acquired most of the drill rig inventory and engineering records of the original Davey Compressor Co. The new company was established in the original facilities in Kent, Ohio, to continue the tradition of excellence in drill rig design and manufacturing.”
